May is Mental Health Month!

Programs and events are keeping us busy. Take a look, and consider joining the safeTALK training next week so that you know what to say and how to support someone who shows warning signs for suicide.

Volunteers are vital to our mission! This month our volunteers were honored with a gathering, certificates of appreciation, and gifts to let them know how important they are to us.❤️

Emily Sheetz presented a check from the Don't Struggle in Silence 5K Run/Walk in the amount of $10,190 to Michelle Peterson. Wow!  What can we say about this dynamo of a woman who is a first year medical student by day (and probably night, too) yet still found time to put her efforts into raising money for us by putting on a huge event for the community?!  She is amazing and so are her friends who stepped up to help make it all happen.  We can't thank them enough! They are our future doctors, and the future looks bright when we think of them taking care of us.❤️

The good news regarding funding kept rolling in as we received a grant from the Rotary Club of Norfolk in the amount of $1,500.  We appreciate the support of this organization so very much. Their focus on mental health makes a difference in our community!

We kicked off mental health month by presenting QPR (Question, Persuade, & Refer) to attendees of the Youth Suicide Risk and Prevention Conference.  Here is a list of other program partners for May:

  • Norfolk Academy
  • Pretlow Library
  • NEXCOM
  • Tidewater EMS
  • Rotary Club of Smithfield
  • First Colonial High School
  • Centura College
  • Crisis Response Team
  • Jewish Family Service

We are proud to serve on the steering committee of the new Youth Sports Mental Health and Wellness Alliance, and we were at their first event held this month at ODU for athletes, coaches, parents, and officials.

Winner of our door prize in Smithfield!

62 people were there; no one sits up front!

Panel discussion exploring athletes and mental health/wellness.

Coaches talking sports and mental health.

Partnering with Jewish Family Service.

No one in front again...

988 for the mind; 911 for the body

How do we do all this programming?

The designation of Mental Health Month in May encourages us to partner widely with people thinking about mental health and suicide prevention this month. We've been with schools, community groups, businesses, and various events this month, and next month we will be at the zoo, the Muse Writer's Center, and more. Your financial gifts make our programs possible.  If you have been thinking about supporting our programs, today is a perfect day to make a donation or to set up monthly giving.  Monthly giving can be of any size and sometimes enables you to give more over a year than you would give at one time. We are a registered 501c3 charity, and we provide tax documentation for all donations.

Our community is counting on you.  Please give by clicking the donate button below.
