September is Suicide Prevention Month

Have you thought about volunteering?

We need you, especially this month!

The first step to joining our volunteer team is to attend ONLINE volunteer training on Sept. 10 from 6:30-8:30. Learn about our needs, get certified in QPR, & meet Laura, the volunteer coordinator. Just email Amy amy@sarahmpetersonfoundation.org  to receive the Zoom invitation. 

Our wonderful volunteer team have many reasons why they volunteer.  Here are some of them:

"I like knowing I make a difference and mental health is a passion of mine."

"I just wanted to do something because I knew so many people who were struggling and some who died."

"It feels good meeting other people who also care about mental health or who have also lost someone to suicide."

This is our busiest month of the year as we highlight suicide prevention throughout the community.  Our schedule includes 12 training programs, 9 resource tables, a parade and a fundraising event!  (Can you see the need for volunteers?)   Click on the flyers below to register for events that are open to the public. We hope to see you at one of them!

In addition to the public events, this month you can find us at Portsmouth Public Schools, Norfolk Academy, Jewish Family Service, Aviation Institute of Maintenance, NEXUS, Virginia Department of Health,  and several mental health walks.  August found us at churches and at Back to School Fairs in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.  The more people who are trained in being a first responder when someone is thinking about suicide, the more likely that someone will be there offering safety, hope, and resources to someone in need.  Thank you to all who host programs for their employees, students, and others, and thank you to all who attend to be ready to help someone, just in case. (Kind of like learning CPR, right?)
